On February 2, 2026, OpenAI announced the launch of the Codex app. The company describes it as a powerful command center designed for building with agents. The app is now available for download on macOS, marking a new desktop tool from the AI research organization.

The Codex app aims to help users work more efficiently with AI agents. It provides a dedicated environment where developers and users can create, manage, and interact with multiple agents at once.

Key Features

The announcement highlights several core capabilities:

  • Multitasking support: Users can run multiple agents in parallel. Changes made by different agents remain isolated through a feature called worktrees, similar to version control branching in software development.
  • Skills creation: Tools, prompts, and conventions can be packaged into reusable “skills.” These skills allow agents to perform specific tasks consistently across projects.
  • Automation workflows: Repetitive tasks can be delegated to the app. Scheduled workflows run in the background, handling routine work without constant user input.

A demonstration video shared with the announcement shows the app’s clean, modern interface. It features a sidebar for navigation, multiple open windows for different agents, and integrated chat panels. The video illustrates users reviewing code suggestions, collaborating on projects, and managing agent interactions in real time.

Availability and Access

OpenAI Codex app is currently available on macOS. OpenAI stated that a Windows version is in development and will be released soon.

For a limited time, access to Codex is included with ChatGPT Free and ChatGPT Go subscriptions. Higher-tier users—Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education—receive doubled rate limits when using Codex across its app, command-line interface (CLI), IDE extension, and cloud services.

This expanded access applies to all supported platforms, making the tool more readily available to a wider range of users during the initial launch period.
