Tesla is working on wireless EV charging technology

Tesla has been at the forefront of electric vehicle (EV) technology but a wireless charging tech would make the recharge process much easier.

In a recent driveby of Cybertruck, Jay Leno, Franz von Holzhausen, Chief Designer and Lars Moravy, the VP of Vehicle Engineering at Tesla commented that the company is developing inductive charging.

“Oh, we’re working on the inductive charging, so you don’t need to plug something in at that point. You just pull in your garage, drive over the pad, and you’re charging” said the VP.

Inductive charging is a type of wireless power transfer. It uses electromagnetic induction to provide electricity to the vehicle’s battery. This provides a more convenient and automated charging experience.

Wireless Charging EV Technology

The charging station consists of a large pad or mat embedded in the ground or mounted on a wall. Inside the pad is a coil of wire that creates a strong alternating magnetic field.

On the other hand, the vehicle is a receiving end with a coil mounted on its undercarriage. This coil is aligned with the charging pad when the vehicle parks over the charging station.

Earlier this year, there were some reports that Tesla had acquired a wireless charging company for around $76 million. However, the world’s largest EV maker reportedly sold this startup soon after its acquisition.

For now, Tesla has shared details about the progress it made with the conductive wireless charging technology.
