EV sales in EU increase 16.3% in November 2023 – ACEA

European Union (EU) continues to surge in the sales of electric vehicles (EVs) as the electrified category now accounts for over 47% of the entire passenger cars registration in the region in November.

Data from the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) reveals that the EU’s car market grew by 6.7% in November. This double-digit marks the 16th consecutive month of outstanding sales performance.

In November, the BEV accounted for 16.3% an increase from 15% in 2022. The year-to-date share now ranks at 14.2%. Hybrid-electric vehicles ranked second with 27.4% of the overall market share, while petrol cars still come first with 32.7% of the market.

For the reported month, the EU registered a surge of 16.4% in battery-electric cars with a total of 144,378 units. Belgium recorded 150.2% yearly growth and it is now the fifth-largest market by volume in EU. On the other hand, Germany declined by 22.5%.

From January to November, the electric car volume reached 1.4 million units with a 48.2% increase compared to the same timeline last year.

The new EU registrations of hybrid-electric cars increased by 28.7% led by Germany at 38.4%, France with 35.8%, and Italy with 30.2% growth. All three combined with others made a cumulative 29.9% hike with 2.5 million units sold as of November.

To be mentioned, the sales of plug-in hybrid electric cars declined by 22.1% to 72,002 units. The market share shrunk from 11.1% in November 2022 to 8.1% in November 2023. Region-wise, Tesla sold 31,394 units of its EVs in November.

From January to November 2023, new car registrations increased by 15.7% with 10 million of units. Except for Hungary, major EU markets gained momentum in new car sales.
