EV sales double in Australia in 2023 with Tesla Model Y leading the market

Electric vehicle (EV) sales in Australia recorded double the number in 2023 as compared to a year earlier reveals data from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) on Thursday.

The data shows that battery-electric vehicles accounted for 7.2% of the overall vehicles sold last year in the country. This number is twice the 3.1% recorded in 2022.

The sales share for 2023 rises to 16.2% of all new vehicle sales once hybrids and plug-in hybrids are included in almost one in every five vehicles sold in Australia.

Among numbers in the EV category, the Tesla Model Y captured the spotlight with 28,769 units. The American EV maker accounted for a total sales of 46,116 units in 2023.

The government is adopting policies to cut emissions by 43% by 2030. Still, SUVs light commercial vehicles, and models with high emissions are on the rise among Australians. The two categories garnered about 78.4% of the new vehicles sold last in 2023.

Meanwhile, FCAI recorded a total of 1,216, 780 vehicles delivered with a 12.5 percent year-on-year increase compared to 2022.
