Foldable Phone

Apple is working on the design of its first foldable phone which may not be an iPhone as rumored but more like an iPad size device.

Supply chain sources from DigiTimes say that Apple has been developing foldable phones for the past five years. The initial plans suggest that it could be a larger device compared to the iPhone and may resemble an iPad or notebook.

Two types of foldable smartphones are in the mainstream commercial market – horizontal and vertical. Both of which have at least two displays, one inside and the other on the rear side. Unlike straight-screen phones, a foldable display could fold alongside the device. Once folded, the cover screen enables some or full interactions.

Since its start in 2019, foldable phones have achieved significant improvements in durability and form factors. Apple’s rival Samsung is leading the segment with the most foldable sales across the globe.

It has an inventory of horizontal and vertical Galaxy models but it is also the key foldable panels supplier to Apple. Still, the iPhone maker is finding it hard to achieve display quality for a foldable phone. This is a major challenge for a foldable phone to go for mass production.

Hinge components are another important aspect that needs to be robust. It has also improved alongside display and more suppliers have begun to produce its parts. Apple is engaging in conversation with Taiwanese partners to fetch the required quality for its device.

Previous input claims that Apple has at least two foldable clamshell prototypes for testing. However, the company is focusing more on quality instead of the price and volume of the production.

Amid these news reports, the Cupertino-based tech company has not committed to a timeline for a foldable launch.
