LG is making new adjustments in iPhone 16 series display supply
South Korea’s LG Display is making some changes in its display supply chain unit for the upcoming iPhone 16 series releasing later this year.
It is reported that LG Display is adding a second supplier to its DDI supply chain. Display Driver IC (DDI) is used to control display pixels driving through a thin film transistor.
Until last year, LG has been purchasing DDI products from LX Semicon, a South Korean headquartered semiconductor company. The company has planned to add Taiwan’s Novatech as the second DDI supplier this year.
Meanwhile, Samsung and BOE will continue their DDI supply partners from last year. These suppliers include Samsung Electronics System LSI and LX Semicon respectively.
The display maker may introduce this new step to reduce the manufacturing cost of iPhone display panels. The report mentions that LG delivered 20 percent more screens to Apple in 2023 about 52.5 million units.
Samsung on the other hand holds the largest share of OLED panel supplies to Apple around 100 million units.
The variation in DDI supply will benefit Novatech and be a setback for LX Semicon. The current shipment volume divide is not shared at the moment.
LX Semicon is still responsible for DDI supplies to BOE but the Chinese display maker doesn’t have a large share in iPhone 16 supplies.
Apple is rumored to be making some changes in the display size for the iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max models. This could be a major improvement compared to their iPhone 15 series counterparts.
However, there’s no official confirmation available on this matter.
