Tesla Adaptive High Beams

Tesla has released a promotional introduction video for the adaptive high beams feature which shows how the vehicle reacts when the capability is activated.

This feature is designed for night driving and helps to reduce the glare to improve on-road visibility. The car functions as usual on the road with full beam but switches quickly to auto-dim once it detects a car.

This feature is powered by a matrix LED headlight with individually addressable and controllable LEDs. These LEDs can be enabled or disabled through an electronic control unit (ECU) inside the car.

Therefore, it can disable the individual pixels to dim the area of the oncoming car while keeping the LEDs enabled on its left and right sides to maintain visibility.

The system detects the oncoming car’s position and reacts accordingly to enable or disable the Matrix LEDs. Once the car passes, the Tesla enables full-beam headlights. This process over and over with each passing vehicle.

Similarly, the adaptive high beams treat a vehicle in front and disable LEDs on the car’s rear while keeping the left or right side LEDs enabled.

Tesla has released an adaptive high beams feature for all models through over-the-air software updates in Europe and several other markets. However, it has not yet been released in the U.S. Check the Tesla adaptive high beams video linked below.
