Tesla has announced that its Robotaxi ride services are coming to Texas in Q2 2025 and it will be paid just like other taxi-hailing across the US.

CEO, Elon Musk said during the Q1 2025 earning call that these cars will deploy unsupervised full self driving (FSD) technologies. “No one in the car. Full services” he said about the launch.

The current version of FSD requires a driver to supervise the car’s movement on the road and take control in conditions where it can’t self-drive. That’s due to the limitation on autonomous capabilities for the consumer version of this technology.

However, the unsupervised version won’t have such safety constraints, instead, it will run without a driver.

The company is aiming for June to launch robotaxi services in Austin, Texas. That’s the close and first release and California is expected to grant operation licenses in 2025. Musk is also optimistic about launching the services in other US states by this year.

That’s one of the major challenges of the current robotaxi industries, players like Waymo have integrated so many radars and sensors in their vehicles before sending them in public to transport people from one place to another.

However, Tesla takes a separate approach, instead of LiDar and other sensors, it is relying on vision-based input to navigate its vehicles on the road.

We’re not so sure whether it will do the same for these public robotaxis, which have certain safety standards and the EV maker will have to convince regulators and road safety agencies that the company could meet all required safety parameters without LiDAR.

Fleet

Tesla CEO previously revealed that the robotaxi services will begin with the existing fleet including Model 3, Y, S, X, and Cybertruck. In the years to come, Tesla will also employ the Cybercab in the fleet probably in early 2027.

Talking about “paid”, the Tesla Robotaxi service price isn’t shared; I guess we’ll have to wait to see them running in Texas.
