Tesla has shared the first official confirmation on the Cortex AI training cluster’s completion, which is now supporting advanced FSD development

The EV maker allocated space for Cortex in late 2023 and started groundwork early next year. The construction and data center setup were completed around Q3 2024 and it was employed to train FSD v13 in Q4.

Late last year, Tesla released FSD v13 for HW4 vehicles, bringing new self-driving improvements and features. However, still supervised. The new training cluster will pave the way for unsupervised FSD and its large-scale deployment in the near future.

“We launched Cortex training cluster at Gigafactory Austin, which was a significant contributor to FSD advancement,” said Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla during a Q1 2025 Earning call.

This AI cluster initially housed 50,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs, which are the primary choice for training large models. However, the company has already started adding 50,000 additional GPUs combining both H100 and H200 chips to store video for training for FSD and Optimus.

He said Tesla continues to invest in hardware and computing infrastructure out of Texas headquarters. These will be required to not only ramp up FSD development but also for the Optimus robot, which will need more than 10 times the computing power than FSD vehicles.
