Adaptive headlights is a very useful feature and amid its long-awaited launch in the US, Tesla’s senior official has shared an update on the potential rollout for craving Tesla owners.

Lars Moravy, VP of Vehicle Engineering at Tesla said the adaptive headlights feature rollout will start with the new Model Y and it will expand to other vehicles.

Lars also mentioned that “we got through the difficult work”. It is supposed to mean a lot of compliances need to be met in order to release this feature in the US. Still, we don’t have an estimated timeline for the release.

Adaptive headlights automatically adjust the beam to improve your driving experience. For example, the vehicle dims high beam headlights’ individual pixels to reduce glare as soon as it detects an oncoming vehicle. The vehicle brightens these dim pixels as soon as the vehicle passes through for a completed road coverage.

Similarly, the headlights adjust to illuminate more when it detects a low beam on a highway. Moreover, the headlights can adjust to curves on the road ahead for better visibility at night. Furthermore, the adaptive headlight feature is enabled by default when Autosteer is engaged.

In the background, the feature relies on matrix LED hardware with a separate controller unit. It can address the individual LEDs and turn them on or off according to the scenario.

Earlier today, the new Model Y test drive units were spotted with an adaptive headlight enabled by default. It suggests that the company could ship this EV with an adaptive headlights feature at the time of the delivery. However, we’ll have to wait for more information.
