xAI is bringing the custom companions feature for Grok users who want to improve their experience with these 3D animated avatars. This feature helps you to get more control over their personalities and create the one that suits your preference.

This new feature will be available in the voice settings for each companion. You can choose to retain the default persona or enter the custom mode. This will take you to a separate screen with a complete set of customizations.

You can change the name of the companion, describe its personality, such as “acts as a historian and explains like a professor with a soft tone”. Custom instructions allow you to set custom greetings, which the selected companion will say as soon as they appear on the screen.

The company has already enabled such settings to customize Grok’s text response. For example, you can ask the chatbot to behave like a robot and tell you a story in the same tone. Or you can set certain restrictions on words, as well as sources and types of conversation that you want to avoid. These instructions help you to get a better user experience than the default one.

The companion feature is currently available for iOS users, and xAI has recently released Valentine, a new companion in the list of available options. The latest Grok custom companions feature will be released for all users with an upcoming update.
