xAI Grok 2 open source model launching soon
Elon Musk, CEO of xAI, said that Grok 2 open-source model, will launch as soon as next week, showing that the company will once again include the global developer community as the focus point.
“It’s high time we open-sourced Grok 2. Will make it happen next week,” wrote Musk on X.

His latest comment follows OpenAI’s release of gpt-oss-120b and gpt-oss-20b, two new open-weight language models under the Apache 2.0 license. The AI company said that the gpt-oss-120b models deliver almost identical performance to 04-mini on core reasoning benchmarks. On the other hand, the gpt-oss-20b model is equivalent to 03-mini.
In March 2024, xAI announced the open release of Grok-1 with an Apache 2.0 license. It had 314 billion parameters Mixture-of-Experts model with 25% of the weights active on a given token. It was trained from scratch by xAI using a custom training stack on top of JAX and Rust in October 2023.
The Grok 2 model made a debut in August last year with two models – Grok-2 and Grok 2 mini models. This model family was also the first to integrate image generation capabilities with FLUX.1.
Musk concluded by saying that the xAI team has been working on shipping new features for Grok users. The most recent releases include companions and Imagine video generation.
