Tesla has launched its Robotaxi app for the public in the US and allowing public users to sign up for a ride in Austin, which has been limited to an invite-only system since the initial launch.

The company made this announcement on X, while confirming that the app can now be downloaded by all iOS users across the US. That said, the autonomous ride service is only available in Austin, and a normal ride-hailing service can be experienced in the Bay Area.

Once downloaded, the app will show users a notification to join a waitlist to register interest when their slot is accepted for a ride in the available Robotaxi service area. The app is also showing these areas, as well as the top features of the autonomous vehicle within the user interface.

Launched in May, Tesla began its autonomous Robotaxi journey from Austin, Texas, with a limited number of Model Y vehicles. These are using the unsupervised version of Full Self Driving (FSD) and without additional hardware technologies such as LiDAR or other sensors.

The dedicated app enables users to book a ride, see its fare, and check its ETA in a real-time view lock-screen notification on iOS devices. Once reached, the app will show the distance and direction of the parked Robotaxi, as well as a bunch of other in-vehicle controls such as trunk opening and more.

When the user enters the car, the app will show an interface to lock the vehicle and begin the ride. At the same time, the user can also cancel the ride or call for support.

During the ride, the mobile app will render the updated ride progress on the map with some in-vehicle controls for sound, climate, music playback, as well as pull over and support. The Tesla team has confirmed that the Robotaxi app is coming to Android users soon.

Authentication issue

Users are reporting an authentication issue within the app, which is denying registration access for new and even existing Tesla account holders. This issue should be resolved soon.
