The 2026 Chicago Auto Show is underway, and the Tesla Cybercab autonomous robotaxi prototype has appeared at the auto show. Visuals from the event showcased the vehicle in a gold finish. The vehicle offers visitors a tangible glimpse into the future of autonomous transportation.

The Cybercab has a minimalistic design. It features butterfly doors that open upward for easy access and a sleek, wheel-free exterior that emphasizes aerodynamics. Notably absent are a steering wheel and pedals, hallmarks of its fully autonomous intent.

Tesla has positioned the Cybercab as a purpose-built robotaxi, optimized for ride-hailing rather than personal ownership. Reports indicate prototypes have already been spotted testing on Chicago streets, building anticipation for unsupervised full-self-driving capabilities.

The two-passenger cabin prioritizes comfort and interaction. Opposing lounge-style seats encourage conversation, while a large central touchscreen serves as the primary interface for entertainment, climate control, and ride management. The spacious, premium interior contrasts sharply with traditional vehicles, evoking a mobile lounge rather than a conventional car.

However, practical concerns have surfaced, particularly about the vulnerability of the large interior screen to vandalism in unsupervised robotaxi service, drawing comparisons to damaged public transit displays in cities.

Tesla’s presence at the show underscores its aggressive push toward autonomy. The Cybercab, unveiled conceptually in late 2024, is slated for production before 2027, potentially at a sub-$30,000 price point. By showcasing it publicly alongside proven models, Tesla is normalizing the idea of steering-wheel-less vehicles and preparing consumers for a robotaxi-dominated future.

As the auto industry evolves, the Cybercab’s appearance at Chicago signals a pivotal shift: from driver-controlled cars to shared, autonomous pods.
