Rivian announced that the first manufacturing validation builds of the Rivian R2 electric SUV are now rolling off the assembly line at its plant in Normal, Illinois. Just 12 months earlier, the site was a simple grass field; a quick build-out shows the team’s hard work to prepare for full production.

The journey to this point started in March 2024, when Rivian unveiled the R2. It can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in under 3 seconds and offers over 300 miles of range. This electric SUV seats five with room for gear and features a NACS charging port. Open-air options include powered rear glass for a 360-degree breeze. Inside, a zonal system handles controls from driving to screens.

In March 2025, the first R2 bodies were made using production dies, a big move toward real builds. That same month, Rivian shared details on expanding its Illinois plant by 1.1 million square feet to support R2 output in 2026.

Progress continued through 2025. In May, Rivian prepared development vehicles for testing, including fun designs with Gear Guard waves. In the following month, the EV maker progressed on design and powertrain work, like the in-house Maximus motor for better efficiency.

The company also started pilot line operations to fine-tune manufacturing. Meanwhile, the R2 faced tests at proving grounds, from off-road tracks to water crossings, and hit public roads for more testing. Furthermore, the company showcased LiDAR setups in wrapped prototypes.

The EV maker will start Rivian R2 at $45,000, which was in line with the $7,500 Federal tax credit. However, the Federal Government has already slashed all green vehicle incentives last year. Therefore, R2 customers must buy this new electric vehicle upon launch. Customer deliveries are set to begin in the first half of 2026, keeping Rivian on schedule.
