Super Heavy Booster 19 Interstage

SpaceX Founder and CEO, Elon Musk, shared an image showcasing the truss-based interstage of Super Heavy Booster 19 (B19), the first Version 3 booster design.

This lightweight structure, featuring a skeletal framework of triangular metal supports, connects the booster to the upper stage Ship while reducing mass significantly compared to previous iterations.

The redesigned interstage is a key upgrade in SpaceX’s Block 3 (V3) Super Heavy, aimed at improving payload capacity and reusability. Minimizing weight, it allows for greater efficiency in flights, supporting ambitious goals like Mars colonization and rapid booster catch attempts. Booster 19 has been the focus of intense activity over the past week at Massey’s test site in Starbase, Texas.

From February 2 to 7, the booster underwent four rigorous cryogenic proof tests, the first full-fill cryos for a V3 design, enabled by recent upgrades to Massey’s tank and pump infrastructure.

These tests involved loading liquid nitrogen to simulate flight conditions, stressing the tanks to verify structural integrity under extreme cold and pressure. Dramatic venting and heavy frosting covered the booster, with ice formations visible during extended holds, including one lasting over eight hours.

B19 passed all tests successfully, a major milestone after challenges with prior prototypes. On February 9, it rolled back to Mega Bay 1 for Raptor engine and grid fin installation. These achievements are crucial for Starship Flight 12, expected in early March 2026, pairing B19 with Ship 39.

As the debut V3 flight, it will demonstrate enhanced reliability, higher thrust from improved Raptors, and potential for repeated catches, paving the way for frequent, cost-effective launches essential to SpaceX’s vision of multi-planetary life.
