South Africa aspires to launch its first EV in 2026

South Africa could get its first electric vehicle (EV) in 2026, announced the country’s trade minister on Monday. The announcement is part of the Just Energy Transition (JET) plan for a low-carbon and climate-resilient economy.

The country will invest over 128.1 million rands ($6.84 billion) under the JET plan from 2023-2027 to fulfill the promises made for South Africa’s decarbonization.

South Africa is a hub for some of the large automakers including Toyota, Isuzu, Volkswagen, Mercedes, and more.

According to the information, the first batch of EVs will be limited. The growth in this sector will happen between 2026 and 2030.

To ensure growth, the South African government is planning to give away incentives and reduce import duties for batteries in vehicles produced and sold in the country.
