Ford on Thursday said that it is pushing the plan to launch a new three-row electric vehicle (EV) to 2027. The EV was earlier planned to launch in 2025 but changed due to some new adjustments in the assembly plant in Canada.

The automaker mentioned that the assembly plant in Oakville will get a comprehensive transformation from gas vehicle assembly to an EV manufacturing complex. The work in this direction will begin in the second quarter of this year.

These changes in the assembly line are to achieve robust next-gen EV production in the country. The company said it will re-time the launch of a three-row EV in 2027.

This extra time will enable the market to get mature for its arrival and the company could also equip a better battery pack for this vehicle by then.

Furthermore, Ford is looking to provide some cost-effective angles in this vehicle as well as improved durability.

“We are committed to manufacturing in Canada and believe this decision will help us build a profitability growing business for the long term,” said Jim Farley, CEO of Ford.

He said that the company is working on the production line to amend the changes as soon as possible. Ford also referenced the existing employees and is likely to maintain them based on their skills. However, Ford may lay off about 2,700 employees at the plant but it’s not officially announced.

Ford on Wednesday shared its first quarter sales results and revealed 42 percent growth in its hybrid vehicles in the U.S. Electric offerings from the company improved 86 percent with Ford F-150 Lighting and Mach-E doing good sales for the company.
