BYD planning second plant in Europe: Report

Chinese car maker BYD announced opening a second automotive manufacturing plant in Europe by 2025. The details are coming from BYD Europe Managing Director Michael Shu on Thursday.

In December, BYD announced its first manufacturing and production center in Szeged Hungary, the home of leading car manufacturing facilities. The company will set up an advanced car production line at this plant and with new job creation.

Shu said that BYD aims to become a leading electric vehicle (EV) company in Europe by 2030. The Chinese auto giant has made major progress in launching passenger cars in Europe. It has opened 230 retail stores across 19 European markets including five new models:

  • BYD HAN
  • BYD TANG
  • BYD ATTO 3
  • BYD SEAL
  • BYD DOLPHIN

These models range from C to E segments including sedans, hatchbacks, and SUVs. BYD planned to release three new models in the region within the next 12 months.

“We are confident that we could be in a leading position by 2030” Shu mentioned during FT’s Future of the Car conference. However, Shu has not revealed a place or groundbreaking ceremony date for this new plant.
