Grok AI maker xAI acquires 1 million square foot property in Memphis

Generative AI company, xAI has expanded its property in Memphis with a new 1 million square foot area to increase its data center capacity. This new addition will support its existing facility in Memphis.
“xAI’s acquisition of this property ensures we’ll remain at the forefront of AI innovation, right here in Memphis,” said site manager Brent Mayo.
Last year, xAI build a fresh AI supercomputer called Colossus featuring 100,000 Nvidia Hopper GPUs. It recently announced that the company is already running 200,000 GPUs and plans to go over a million.
For now, xAI has not announced its future plans with this new 1 million square foot Memphis property.

This computing capacity is used to train Grok, xAI’s Large Language Model (LLM) based chatbot. This is available for text-to-text conversations. Its most recent capabilities are text-to-image generation and advanced voice with Grok 3.
Over the past one year, xAI has introduced standalone Grok app for mobile devices and also launched a separate Grok website for a new user experience.
This expansion is part of its recent $6 billion funding, which has been used to improve the computing and conduct more research in existing product.
