xAI Grok 2 model goes open source, Grok 3 is coming in early 2026
xAI has officially released the open source version of the Grok 2 AI model, allowing anyone to use, study, modify, and share their own creations with this Grok version in the base. That said, the Grok 2 repository is now available on Hugging Face for distribution.

The company is allowing users a non-exclusive, worldwide, revocable license to use, reproduce, distribute, and modify the Materials for non-commercial and research purposes, and those who generate less than a million dollars in annual revenue.
The Grok open source model doesn’t allow the use of xAI’s materials, derivatives, or outputs (including generated data) to train, create, or improve any foundational, large language, or general-purpose AI models, except for modifications or fine-tuning of Grok 2.
It also requires attribution in distributions or products, compliance with xAI’s Acceptable Use Policy and applicable laws, and includes standard open source elements like no warranties, limitations of liability, and termination clauses upon breach or patent litigation involvement.
Elon Musk, Founder and CEO of xAI, announced this open source model on X, while also confirming that the Grok 3 open source model is coming in six months, which means somewhere in the first quarter of 2026.
The @xAI Grok 2.5 model, which was our best model last year, is now open source.
Grok 3 will be made open source in about 6 months. https://t.co/TXM0wyJKOh

Musk’s announcement of Grok 2 open source, and an upcoming Grok 3 in the same category, aligns with a 2025 McKinsey survey showing 72 percent of tech firms use open source AI, potentially pacing but raising concerns about security given the collaborative architecture of such models.
Speaking of this model, xAI released Grok 2 in August 2024 with a significant boost in reasoning over Grok 1.5, and will unlock some great potential for the open source community
