xAI reveals the third Grok AI companion – Valentine
We now have a first look at the third Grok AI companion, Valentine, who has a dark personality and good looks, and there’s something else you should know about the character.
This male character is named after the protagonist in Stranger in a Strange Land by Robert A. Heinlein. Valentine Michael Smith is a human raised by Martians, embodies deep empathetic understanding, aligning with the term “grok” also mentioned in the book. This term is used as the main AI model name by xAI and it’s now very famous.

Elon Musk announces Valentine as the third Grok companion
Valentine, often referenced as Mike or the Man from Mars, is innocent and has a childlike worldview. His Martian upbringing has swayed all of the human emotions and biases, prejudices, and social norms.
In the novel, his innocence manifests in his literal interpretation of language and actions, which sometimes leads to humour and creates important moments. Interestingly, he has a unique ability to “grok”, a Martian concept of deeply and emphatically understanding something or someone. This is the same concept of the Grok AI model since the day one of launch.
This ability makes him extraordinary and compassionate, and attuned to others’ feelings, which defines his great characteristics.
These are rather more dramatic but a much intriguing trait, and suits Valentine as he will interact with humans via AI. Eventually, he can make conversation more enjoyable with his Martian-like thinking.
Grok’s companions list currently includes two characters: Ani, a female, anime-style girl, who made this feature popular, and the other is an animal character who has a good and a bad side. Valentine is also showing in the Grok app, but this companion is under preparation for launch.
